These are scanned from the original 1948 View-Master reel.
It's kind of migraine inducing after a while, but you can cross your eyes and align the two images into one to get the 3-D effect if you want.

Burn Books

James Mason

I've had an urge recently to challenge myself by doing a "realistic" comic. So I thought to search for a tough guy face to base my character on.
I was watching TCM when a little profile on James Mason came up. I thought he had the right looks and did a few sketches of him.

Hank Ketcham was a god

I've been pouring over this book called Where's Dennis? that catalogs much of Ketcham's pre-Dennis illustrations.
While he was known for his line work, I was enamored with his choice of colors as well.

Check out the yellow and green. Both are rich and colorful and yet are not garish. I also love the subdued, responsible use of pink on both the dog and the blanket:


And when I say responsible, I mean not like this:


Also note the use of lines pointing toward the man, the main focus:


The boy on the left's multiple legs is a hint at Ketcham's animation past.


For my money, Ketcham drew the most appealing kids ever.

Nice Shades

Life as a caricaturist

When I worked at Legoland as a caricaturist there was the common look of disappointment and immediate drainage of joy and fun from a child's face after I tore off the paper and showed it to them. Not to mention some snooty moms.

Pleaser II

I recently got an old box from school which held the newspaper office's Polaroid camera. The date on the box says 1982. It's the box for Kodak's instant film camera, Pleaser II.



I'm not sure what the hand is pleasing in the picture.
